My goal is to go beyond what other facilities provide, and give the people the level of service they deserve and get actual results! I've observed the level of quality provided by multiple mental health facilities, nurses, social workers, and staff.
I've witnessed the facility expectations on medical providers to serve as many patients as possible in a limited timeframe resulting in providers being able to only offer limited time to each client - resulting in an inability to truly assess the client's needs. I've watched as psychiatrists and nurse practitioners meet with clients for short periods of time often less than 20 minutes to assess symptoms and circumstances which they don't fully take the time to comprehend, then they write a prescription to hopefully address the issues presented with limited results. I watched as many of the staff attempt to avoid doing assigned group sessions at designated times because they don't want to put in the effort or "just want to have a chill day". I've observed social workers be assigned to do "family therapy sessions" without ever having met the client before the sessions began, and when the session finally does take place, the focus is not on the problem, rather it is on the "safety plan" being completed because it is required for liability purposes before discharge.
Now, don't get me wrong, not everyone was giving subpar service, but the facilities didn't promote actual healing. Often times the words, "glorified babysitter" were tossed around about the mental health technicians, and staff were instructed that our job was not to modify behavior or enact any real change but to merely stabilize the clients until they could return home and do the real work there! Isn't that interesting? Parents were paying a facility about $2000 per day to "stabilize" their child, so they could get medicated, go to a few classes (if they wanted to) and return home after a safety plan was in place, so the true journey toward healing could begin...later.
